TRACK: Mndsgn covers Sofie’s ‘Truth Of The Matter’ – chilled Stones Throw soul funk

LA’S Mndsgn, the musician and producer who drops glimmering and floaty future funk soul for Stones Throw, has just shared a cover of “Truth Of The Matter” by stablemate Sofie. Take a listen to a very chilled slice of future soul below.

“Truth Of The Matter” is taken from Viennese singer and former Stones Throw staffer Sofie’s debut long player from earlier this year, Cult Survivor, which we reviewed here and of which we said: “It’s so cool, it’s erudite, and it will unfold graciously in your life rather than arrive at the door unannounced at midnight, clutching Pernod.” It’s packed with chanson-inflected, intelligent European pop.

And cleverly, Mndsgn’s version leaves that pristine, brainy pop intact while also alchemising the track with chill vocals, precise and mellow downbeatz and soul harmonies.

Mndsgn says of the cover: “’Truth Of The Matter’ is one of my favorite songs on Cult Survivor. It sounds like a theme song for a classic TV show.

“The melodies and harmonies were stuck in my head after the first time I saw a video of Sofie playing the tune with a band back when it was just a demo.

“The song and its feeling is somewhat of a contrast from what I’ve been listening to, so it was a breath of fresh air to step outside of my comfort zone vocally.

“Shout out to Sofie for writing a classic number and also for showing me the chords over Facetime!”

Sofie, these days based back in her native Austria, is a DJ and an original member of Boiler Room who worked A&R at Stones Throw for four years, bringing Mndsgn to the label.

Mndsgn has released two studio albums on Stones Throw: his 2014 debut Yawn Zen and 2016’s Body Wash, as well as 2019’s beats-focused record Snaxx.

Expect more new music from Mndsgn in 2021.
