With a voice of velvet and a infectious yearning tone, Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Amaya Laucirica has just released the single ‘Road to Us’, which follows her earlier release ‘Now Or Never’ (see my review here).

‘Road To Us’ coasts along on a motorik beat and dappling crystalline guitars with Laucirica’s vocals seeped in a reflective melancholia. The guitars ebb and flow under the surface – delayed and echoed, soft and supple with an arpeggiated gurgle that is hypnotic under the bittersweet melodies.

Laucirica says of the track:

In a similar vein to ‘Now or Never,’ this song examines a couple’s journey together. They’ve travelled, shared music, and now their lives have changed. The momentum has shifted, and they’re left questioning, ‘Where is the road to us?’

The lyrics reflect Laucirica personal challenges:

When travel and music-making stopped because of having a child and putting energy into other projects, I found myself questioning how those things shape individual and shared identity. This song is about trying to put the pieces back together.

The result is a transfixing, melancholy pop song of the highest order. The sense of restlessness and reflection is perfectly captured by the video filmed inside a car by renowned musician Adalita and edited by Geoffrey O’Connor (a firm favourite musician of ours in his own right) at Vanity Lair Studio. It was filmed across various locations in Victoria, traversing Melbourne’s iconic landscapes — from the William Bolte Bridge and the CBD to St Kilda Road and the coastal stretch from Port Melbourne to St Kilda.

This is a heartbreakingly beautiful track and video, and augurs well for her album ‘The Blue Hour’ slated for release on 2 September 2025. In the meantime, ‘Road To Us’ is available to download and stream here.
