Track: Reb Fountain sparkles with her inimitable style and grace in her new single ‘Lacuna’, and announces New Zealand tour.

‘Lacuna’, the new single from New Zealand icon Reb Fountain swaps a swaggering bravado evident in her last single ‘Beastie’ (see review here) for something more restrained but just as powerful: a simmering, prowling and enigmatic track that has a hint of something ominous. With its subtle sinuous spine and a fuzzy guitar interlude, ‘Lacuna’ is packed full of presence and style, symbolising Fountain’s stature as a brilliant songwriter and singer.

There is constant movement and a swirling undercurrent of instruments that create a mesmerising whirlpool. Fountain says of the track:

Lacuna is me describing what’s it like to grow into oneself, to wrestle with the intangible nature of our human condition, to see who we are. Unifying our many selves – the sum of our parts.

The lyrics reveal a fatalistic romanticism:

You know I can’t be whole with the sum of us apart.

The video, beautifully shot in the luminescent township of Queenstown by director Lola Fountain-Best is mysterious and pastoral: raw and graceful, something Fountain says is an exploration and transformation; a dance with our many selves. It’s certainly filled with an endearing expressionism – a touch of humour in the thrilling beauty of the landscape:

You can stream/download ‘Lacuna’; through all the usual sites here. The single comes off Fountain’s forthcoming album ‘Iris’ due out on 1 October 2021 through the legendary Flying Nun Records label and available to preorder through the link below:

In the meantime, for those lucky to live in Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud, Fountain will be on tour to launch the album:
