Brisbane/Meanjin producer Sampology has just released the beautiful and expansive new track Memories In Flight, as well as announcing that forthcoming album ‘Regrowth’ will be out on 3 September. ‘Memories in Flight’ highlights Sampology’s mastery in producing gently soaring, winding sonic experiences by combining the electronic with the organic.

About the track, Sampology says: “‘Memories in Flight’ introduces people to the environment and mood of my forthcoming ‘Regrowth’ album. Organic, percussive, with thick instrumentation as the soothing backdrop.”

The song was recorded both in the producer’s home studio and on his travels, slowly evolving, layer by layer, to include more and more elements (harp, vibraphone, choir and piano). The final product is an immersive, multi-faceted soundscape which is a wonderful mix of nature, electronica and acoustics.

The track’s official music video, uplifting and pleasingly sentimental, splices archive super-8 film footage shot by Sampology’s late grandfather and includes hand drawn animation.

“During the 2020 lockdown I went through my late Grandad’s archive of super 8 film footage and stumbled across footage of myself at 8 years old, flying over a city through the magic of green screen technology. This short scene became the spirit of this song, the music video and the forthcoming album artworks.” – Sampology

From a childhood singing in the choir at Brisbane’s St John’s Cathedral, to developing a love for musical samples in his teens, Sampology’s style (not to mention his name) is a huge nod to his formative influences. He started performing in local venues at 17, gradually moving interstate and finally overseas, to DJ and perform in Europe and the UK, America and Asia. The past six years have seen an organic progression from DJ to producer, as well as the release of EP’s Natural Selections (2016) and Mt Glorious (2018). His growing reputation in the Brisbane music community led to Gilles Peterson inviting him to join the Worldwide FM family in 2019 and he has hosted a monthly show on the global station ever since.

Later this year, Sampology will release the Regrowth LP – an album which will feature samples recorded completely from scratch as well as string quartets, woodwind, 20-piece choirs, vibraphones, double bass, pianos and synths. Collaborators on the album include Allysha Joy, Seven Davis Jr, James Chatburn, Silent Jay and a variety of instrumentalists both around Brisbane and overseas. Most of ‘Regrowth’ was also written and recorded during the Australian bushfires of 2019, hence the inspiration for the album’s title.
