Eora/Sydney-based alternative rock band Second Idol have dropped their new single ‘Boxing Ring,’ which was produced by Clayton Segelov (Shady Nasty, Sleepmakeswaves, Dear Seattle) at The Brain Studios.

‘Boxing Ring’ is a reflection on being a woman in the music industry. It can be a circus. It’s informed by the barriers women face in the music industry. It’s about our aspirations, dreams and struggles. The title refers to the continual fight that we face in the industry. That women, non-binary and trans musicians are often treated as diversity trophies, novelised, and not taken seriously. We’re constantly pitted against each other and cut down. It feels as though we’re thrown into a boxing ring with each other, fighting for scraps, where often the more femme-presenting individual wins and men leer from every corner. Join us in the ring to fight our way out.

Second Idol on ‘Boxing Ring’

Kicking off with a slick drum intro, ‘Boxing Ring’ swiftly ramps up with a piercing guitar riff reminiscent of A Flock Of Seagulls’ ‘Ran’. Kate Farquharson’s vocals blend in and with some forceful guitar work, forge a dynamic alt-rock vibe that propel the song onward. The lyrics, carrying a meaningful and pertinent message, are delivered with the intensity of someone intimately acquainted with the topic.

‘Boxing Ring’ has been released with an accompanying music video, directed by Cameron Davies. The setting is the gritty yet picturesque locales of Brighton Le Sands and the pulsating heart of Eora/Sydney’s Inner West. It kicks off with intriguing snapshots of street art, setting the tone for the band’s performance against a dreamy, beach backdrop. The video adopts a nostalgic VHS-style aesthetic, complete with retro framing and coloring, adding layers of emotional depth to Kate Farquharson’s powerful and captivating presence.
