Royel Otis have rapidly become musical royalty not only in their home Australia but globally, and we have been keenly following their ascendancy since their debut single back in 2021. And it is easy to see why they have rapidly risen to the top like cream: they have released a series of luscious, quirky hyperkinetic tracks, music that is delicately laced with a certain sense of humour and a commercial pop sensibility with their own unique sound.

Their stunning debut album ‘PRATTS &PAIN’ released at the beginning of the year (reviewed by me here) will be re-released on Friday as a deluxe edition entitled ‘PRATTS & PAIN – It Ain’t Over Til It Ends’ through OURNESS, with vinyl. To celebrate, the duo have released the brand new single, ‘If Our Love Is Dead’.

‘If Our Love Is Dead’ has all the hallmarks of the duo: a frenetic pace, deliciously arch lyrics and a thread of yearning throughout. There is their trademark nod to their food obsession, and an almost naif and endearing earnestness to the delivery:

I’ll let it rain today
Send her, the weathervane
On my knees, I say

Well it’s easy

The soup has come to life
The music sings while I
Drown in your thighs

Royel Otis say on the single:

‘If Our Love Is Dead’ was born out of that feeling when you’ve been with someone for a while and you’re not sure if the spark is still there. You’re like… If it’s dead and it’s not there, then what are we holding on to? What are we doing it for? Are we doing it for the sake of just sticking it out, or do we actually just want to cut paths and move on with things?

Quite simply, this is a band that can do no wrong (see our recent live review from the intrepid Jess Hutton):

Heart racing stuff which can be found on the new edition of PRATTS & PAIN and can be downloaded and streamed here. You can order the special edition vinyl here.

Currently, Royel Otis are back in the United States for their second sold out national tour of the year, amassing over 60k headline tickets in that region alone. They will finish off 2024 with another sold out lap of Europe and the UK, before jetting home to Australia for a run of festival performances at Lost Paradise, Beyond The Valley and Wildlands.
