They don’t know this of course (well, not till they read this) but I’m sort of very proud of The Wave Pictures. Before landing in Sheffield I lived in a little village outside Loughborough, Shepshed (no, you won’t have) and growing up there was very little in the way of cool music that came from the fair county of Leicestershire. Shawaddywaddy didn’t really do it for me, despite my attending their nightclub in the local village on occasion, and I was way too uncool to have heard of PO!, Crazyhead and Diesel Park West were never quite as good as I wanted, so it’s been left to the equally brilliant Wave Pictures (about equidistant the other side of Loughborough) and The Young Knives to fly the local flag (I know I’m missing out loads of brilliant Leicester bands here, but bear with me – I had a fairly drab and unadventurous upbringing), and show we can be cool and make brilliant music, us Leicestershire boys.

And so The Wave Pictures return with ‘Jim’, a new song from the first of two albums they’re set to release this year, Brushes With Happiness (which will be followed by Look Inside Your Heart in October) out on 22nd June via Moshi Moshi. Its a slow blues, largely stripped back and gritty, with Dave Tattersalls engaging and familiar warble recalling Jim’s tale.

Check it out, here
