Just ahead of the release of their third album Cocoa Sugar, Scottish hip-hop trio Young Fathers have released a new track, Toy. The band Alloysious Massaquoi, Graham ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole, have already released two tracks from the album, lead single Lord and, currently recieving heavy airplay, In my view, and Toy follows on their lead into the trio’s more muscular and self-assured sound.

It starts with these muscular synths and sounds, hard edge stabs over a wobbly bassline. Over the top the three trade out verses with some skill and verve, the lyrics focusing on a relationship, and its aftermath, from the perspective of a used ex-partner. Throw in a soulful sung chorus and it’s right up there with anything the band have produced.
