Track: Ulrich Schnauss & Mark Peters drop the glimmer of ‘Hindsight is 20-20’, with a September completion of their three-album cycle in hand

HAILING from two great port cities – Kiel, on the German Baltic coast, in the case of Ulrich Schnauss, and Liverpool, in the case of erstwhile Engineers guitarist Mark Peters – these two musicians are united in a musical approach that’s always touched upon a hazy shoegaze from various exploratory angles and looks forward, outward.

They’re finally completing a trilogy of collaborative records that began with 2011’s Underrated Silence, continued with 2013’s Tomorrow Is Another Day and now finally, eight years on, the circle will be complete with the September release of Destiny Waving; from which early autumn album we’re delighted to have a first track, “Hindsight is 20-20”, here for you today.

it really melds the individual aesthetic of both contributors in a glorious haze: the chattering tronica shimmer of Ulrich – who’s become a full-time member of Tangerine Dream in recent years – plays against the cycling and crisp riff pastoralism from Mark on a track which positively glows with instrumental atmosphere.

Initial sessions for Destiny Waiving began at Ulrich’s East London home studio in way back in 2017; the final mixdown was completed there late last year. Although its gradual march towards completion has been protracted the greater part of the record was completed during 2017, in part informed by improvisational sets in London, Dublin and St James’ Church in Birmingham.

We’re told that Destiny Waiving is arguably the most focused and concise of the three; the limited double CD contains an extra EP with a quartet of tracks from the album reversioned with live drums from Von Spar member Jan-Philipp Janzen.

Ulrich Schnauss & Mark Peters’ Destiny Waiving will be released digitally, on CD, on limited (500 only) 2xCD and vinyl by Bureau B on September 24th; you can order your copy now at Tapete Records’ online shop or from Rough Trade, here.
