There’s something about the vibe of Success, this earthy brass-laden soul show-stopper that has goaded me off the sofa, and filled me with the urge to write about it and, ultimately, share it.
Rodney P is in the middle of something of a renaissance at the moment. fresh from the release this Summer of ‘Gangster Chronicles: The Definitive Collection’, a retrospective of London Posse, the UK game-changing group with which he made his name. More recently he’s been out and about with Dub Pistols, and made an acclaimed LP with Zed Bias and Fallacy under the name of Sleepin’ Giantz, which caused something of an underground stir.
One of several cuts made with Nottingham soul sister Harleighblu, a regular on the pages of Backseat Mafia, Success is a perfect platform for her honeyed vocal, over the top of Rodney P’s rhymes and flow, still putting the competition in its place some twenty years after he started. Backing it all up is the New Orleans style Renegade Brass Band, adding their pipes to the intoxicating mix. It comes out on September 30th via Tru Thoughts.
All in all, you have to say its a, well, Success….
