When Alan Wills, the former Shack drummer and Deltasonic label boss, was tragically killed in a cycling accident in May last year, it seemed that his label, founded initially as a way of getting The Coral’s music released, would be no more. So the fact that The Vryll Society are due to release their debut single on the label on July 17th is testament to his partner Ann Heston, and to the labels new partnership with Republic of Music, which will see the release not only of new music such as The Vryll Society, but also gems from the labels vaults in coming months.
The bands debut single, Deep Blue Skies, shimmers from the off, this psychedelic hazy hanging heavy over it, as guitars noodle away, and vocals a soaked into the echoey ether. It has this delicious sense of meandering, but continues to grow as the song develops, the guitars duelling with eachother, the wah wah and echo pedal on one side, the winding solo lines on the other. As it turns out, it ends as a score draw.
I didn’t know Alan Wills, but I knew the music he played on and put out. And I know he would have approved, wholeheartedly.
