SXSW Sydney cracked open its doors today, unleashing over a thousand events, panels, and experiences, with creatives and innovators flooding in from more than 40 countries. Sydney is staking its claim as the Asia-Pacific’s epicentre for global networking, collaboration, and creativity, as the city pulses with energy. The conference is housed across three core venues: ICC Sydney, Novotel Darling Square, and UTS Building 8—a tight triangle of thought leadership and artistic vision.

Strolling through Sydney’s ICC, you’re immediately swept into a buzzing ecosystem of creativity. There’s a pulse here, a quiet urgency in the air. A cluster of dancers huddle in front of a towering mirror, their reflections sharp as they practice their moves, the syncopation of feet hitting the floor creating a kind of rhythm all its own. Everywhere you look, people are on the move—some hustling, some lingering—but most wearing that telltale SXSW lanyard around their necks like a badge of entry to this temporary creative city.

Backseat Mafia is in the thick of it, catching as much of the music madness as possible. The official music festival may not start until tomorrow, but today had its quiet prelude with a sun-soaked lunch set from Ruby Jackson at Tumbalong Park. Office workers who’d drifted out for a bite found themselves swaying to her cool, neo-jazz vibes. It was the calm before the storm, a perfect soft landing into what’s sure to be a week-long rollercoaster of sound.

After Ruby’s set, we wandered into USA House where the mood was laid-back but buzzing, with burgers, beers, and conversations flowing freely. It felt like a breath before the plunge because, starting tomorrow, it’s full throttle as musicians across every genre take to the stages. If you’re still on the fence, grab yourself a pass, slap on a bracelet, and dive into the chaos. This is SXSW Sydney.
