Live Review & Gallery: And We’re Off! SXSW Sydney’s Opening Party at The Underground

The SXSW Music Festival Opening Party at The Underground had a buzz that only a place like SXSW can conjure. Nestled in the intimate, electric atmosphere of the Underground, a series of talented artists all took the stage to kick off the festival with a dynamic blend of sounds that spanned genres and geographies.

2touch opened the night with a signature style that effortlessly meshed the chilled-out beats and electronic vibes that the duo has become known for. There was a natural fluidity to their set, the kind that makes you feel like you’re witnessing something both spontaneous and incredibly polished – all whilst clearly having a fantastic time.

Next up was YONLAPA, the 4-piece indie pop band from Chiang Mai, Thailand, making their debut on Australian soil. Grabbing attention right from the start, lead singer Noina sang through a makeshift telephone microphone creating a clever nostalgic, lo-fi filter over her dreamy vocals. The set quickly blossomed into their signature atmospheric style, with layers of soft rock and pop enveloping the room, a stand out act for sure.

Closing out the night was Ngaiire, who returned to SXSW Sydney with a sense of homecoming. Now back in Papua New Guinea, she’s no stranger to the Eora/Sydney stage, considering we last caught her singing amongst the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Opera House just months ago. Her soulful, genre-defying style brought the house down, with every note wrapped in emotion and electric vibrance. Ngaiire reminded us all why she’s a standout talent, not just in Australia but on a global scale.

The opening night captured the spirit of SXSW—cultural diversity, innovation, and the kind of talent that feels boundary-pushing.
