A new voice is rising from the reed beds and waterways of East Anglia — raw, urgent, and steeped in myth. Fenland alt-rock trio Eels! Eels! Eels! have arrived with their debut EP eel land, released March 21st, led by the striking lead single ‘Owls’.
Drawing from the eerie beauty and folklore of the fens, the band carve out a sound that feels both ancient and immediate. Their music channels the untamed spirit of a landscape shaped by shifting tides and buried histories, blending poetic storytelling with an urgent call to confront climate change. In their hands, local legends — Fen Tigers, drowned lands, and defiant figures — become visceral, riff-driven songs.
Recorded at Grange Studios in the middle stretch of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire with producer Isi Clarke, eel land is a four-track introduction that bristles with intent. It captures the band’s hunger, grit and deep-rooted connection to place — an untamed, fen-inspired first statement from a group determined to turn eyes and ears back to the imperial mud.
Opening track and lead single ‘Owls’ sets the tone. Built on fuzzy guitars and a driving alt-rock backbone, it blends psychedelic flourishes with indie sensibilities. Fuzzy yet direct, the track balances thick guitar tones with infectious, pointed vocal melodies, resulting in something that feels both garage-grunge in texture and sharply accessible. Thematically, it explores isolation and resilience, evoking long drives across empty landscapes with a fearless, forward motion.
Talking about the single, the band explains: “Opening and lead track ‘Owls’ explores the struggle of feeling isolated and unsupported. It has a drive on long stretches of land, with a gung ho attitude, ready to face anything that is thrown at them.”
The EP continues to unfold through vivid, myth-infused storytelling rooted in Fenland lore and atmosphere.
Speaking further about the new EP, they add: “’Separated by the Cut’ narrates the journey of Berney Bosgrove, cheating the devil and living with the consequences of that choice. ‘Nothing to Care’ merges two worlds, almost Los Angeles meets Ye Olde Fenland, reflecting on how nature can slowly take over the soul. Closing track ‘Warrior’ turns its gaze outward, asking whether harmony between people might ease the shared anxiety of climate. Inspired by comments made by King Charles the first when the fens were drained in 1630”
Eels! Eels! Eels! are already gaining traction. The trio recently sold out their hometown headline show at The Tram Depot in Cambridge and have been building a fast-growing following. Their previous single ‘How The Cruel’ has earned early support from BBC Introducing, Radio X and Louder Than War Radio — a sign that their blend of atmosphere and urgency is resonating far beyond the fens.
