Just last August, rising artist Winifred played her very first headline performance to a packed crowd in her hometown of Townsville, Queensland. Flash forward to now – the singer, songwriter and dancer has just unveiled EP 1, her debut body of work, out now via MNRK Music Australia. Winifred’s creative journey with ‘EP 1’ saw her collaborate with such exciting Australian producers as One Above, Chí and Cheekbone, in addition to working in LA with Grammy-nominated producer David Ott (‘On Yr Time’) and Tim Anderson (‘Fallen’) best-known for his production work for Solange, Halsey, Billie Eilish and Banks.

Speaking about new single ‘On Yr Time’, Winifred says: “I wrote this whilst on a writing trip in LA. It’s about being an observer of someone using their strengths to control and manipulate people around them and the frustration of feeling as though you’re the only one who sees it for what it is… Be on your own time, not someone else’s.’

Accompanying the single is the beautifully low-key official music video, shot in Brisbane and directed by renowned Australian creative and choreographer Zoee Marsh. The clip takes a freestyle approach, as shots cut between car-park rooftops and the city streets. Half the video was shot on a Panasonic handi-cam and the other with a professional crew, in order to help capture the light and shade tones within the song itself.

“I made the music video for ‘On Yr Time’ with Zoee Marsh who’s been my long standing visual co-pilot and movement coach. All of the Winifred music videos are highly expressive and dance oriented” – Winifred

Winifred creates quirky alt-pop with a smooth dash of R&B, previously having released a trio of standalone singles, Chain, Into The Night, and most-recently, Drowning Purple, which was featured in the 2021 series of Love Island UK.

Past support for Winifred includes love from triple j’s flagship Australian music program, Home & Hosed as well as MTV Australia, Pilerats, Cool Accidents, The Music and Women In Pop. Winifred’s music caught the attention of programmers at Canadian Music Week, where she was part of their official showcase selection in 2021. Outside of her own project, Winifred has co-written for other artists including Alice Ivy’s 2019 single, In My Mind featured in a global ‘Shot & Edited on iPhone’ Apple TVC.

Winifred is the first signing to MNRK Music Australia, a division of MNRK Music Group, formerly eOne Music. And with such a pleasurable listening debut, we have no doubt she will continue to carve out a unique space in the industry.
