We are over the moon to be able to bring you an exclusive listen to the new single ‘Guns n’ Money’ from Sydney trio PJ Orr. Purveyors of the finest antipodean fare, it’s been a while since the band released its album ‘Tightrope Walker’ back in 2020 (see my review here) and it’s great to see them back with another example of their brand of sparkling indie rock. Slipping along along on a muscular bass and singer Phil Orr’s velvet sardonic vocals, the track skips with a high step – a touch of alt country twang carried on soaring melodies.

There is a delightful merge of the pop cadences of Crowded House, the passion of Paul Kelly, a swinging sixties paisley-soaked psychedelic blush and more fizz and sparkle than a shaken bottle of soda. Antipodean to its very Blundstones, ‘Guns and Money’ is a boot-scooting blast.

Orr enigmatically says of the track:

With all its dense complexity, relationships, highs and lows, guns n’ money – modern life coexists with the natural world which hums along without recognition, fear nor favour. Beauty can be found in strangest places if you look it right – this song pauses to do so… then it’s gone again.

It’s delightful track tinged with a filigree of whimsy that positively sparkles in the outback sun:

‘Guns n’ Money’ is out tomorrow (Thursday, 29 August 2024) and you can download through the link above and through all the usual streaming and download sites.

It comes off PJ Orr’s forthcoming album ‘Wake Me When I’m Thirsty, produced by Tim Kevin (Youth Group, Holly Throsby, The Apartments, Restless Leg) at his Sydney studio, which will be out into the world on 25 October 2024, and can be pre-ordered here.

PJ Orr are singer and songwriter Phil Orr, bassist Nando Durango and drummer Dave Loney.
