We are very honoured to premiere today the new single ‘Muse’ from Naarm/Melbourne based artist Jacob Fitzgerald – a musician we have followed with great interest here at the southern outpost of Backseat Mafia. ‘Muse’ is a hyperreactive blast of sonic adrenalin administered by an artist who is fills his music with an insouciant swagger and a blast of joy.

Fitzgerald’s voice has a reverberated fifties cool about it, with a muscular rhythm section and plundering guitars that thunder throughout. The doo-wop backing vocals add a final luster to the shine.

Fitzgerald says track stems, as its title suggests, from a singular but mysterious source of inspiration:

Essentially, there are times where I’m writing about love/lust, but I’m not actively in love or possessing a similar feeling. In those situations, I found I naturally gravitate to basing the subject around this one particular person. To be honest, I don’t even really know her, but she somehow is tattooed into my subconscious and is someone I can draw inspiration from EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I dunno, she just has the ‘thing’.

I think I would not be wrong to suggest that Fitzgerald has that certain intangible thing about him too: a bona fide rock’n’roll star quality with an enigmatic presence:

‘Muse’ is released into the wild tomorrow and you can pre-save it here.

To celebrate the release of the new single, Fitzgerald and his band will tour the Australian East Coast supporting Selfish Sons, performing six shows, including stops in Naarm/Melbourne, Meanjin/Brisbane, Yugambeh/Gold Coast and Eora/Sydney. He’s also sold-out headline shows and supported the likes of The Delta Riggs, Fergus James and John Floreani (Trophy Eyes). Details are:

Sat 6 Aug | Stay Gold, Naarm/Melbourne Vic
Fri 12 Aug | The Zoo, Meanjin/Brisbane Qld
Sat 13 Aug | Hotel Carrington, Meanjin/Brisbane Qld
Sun 14 Aug | The Bearded Dragon, Yugambeh/Tamborine Qld
Fri 19 Aug | Burleigh Bazaar, Yugambeh/Gold Coast Qld
Sat 20 Aug | The Great Club, Eora/Sydney NSW
