We are huge fans of New Zealand outfit Voodoo Bloo and we are honoured to premiere the exciting video for their new single ‘Small’.

Voodoo Bloo started off as a project of Rory McDonald – a native of Sheffield in the UK but now based in Wellington New Zealand – and we covered the dynamic and anarchic single ‘MMA’ last year. ‘Small’ is a powerfully restrained cinematic piece – it’s a thrilling post punk new wave visceral blast of goodness with soaring vocals and a steely barbed-wire spine. McDonald says of the track:

‘Small’ is a song about the ‘Peter Pan complex, knowing you have to grow up no matter how hard the change may be. In a way it was written not only to a younger self but also my mother, about my growth into a person, but the distance it’s made from memories long gone.

The guitars provide jangling shards of sound over the thunderous rhythm section with MacDonald’s voice profound and yearning, with mountainous choruses. There is a deep seated eighties vibe that resonates. McDonald says of the recording process:

Recording at Massey Studios with Greg Haver and Scott Seabright will be a time that I will forever cherish. I believe the final product of how this song came out really rips out the emotions behind the track in a soaring soundscape that will be fresh to specific sound expectations of fans of our band.

The accompanying video is an explosive performance piece that perfectly captures the exuberance and dynamism of the band:

‘Small’ is available to download and stream here.

The transformation into a full band was an inevitable process, with the new line-up consisting of Rory McDonald as lead singer and guitar, Daniel Maslen on guitar, Oli Cass on bass and Jackson Kidd on drums. McDonald says:

This is a new era for Voodoo Bloo. A new chapter of what we stand for and what we wish to create beyond our wildest imagination. I started Voodoo Bloo as I wanted to start a new stage in my musical career, whilst still using the knowledge I gained from my previous band, to try and make something really special to me.

Voodoo Bloo have announced the release of a new album, ‘The Blessed Ghost’, out on 15 July 2022 through PlasticGroove.
