We are pleased to premiere today the gentle reflective track ‘Miles Away’ from Naarm/Melbourne resident Velvet Bloom.

‘Miles Away’ floats across gentle acoustic guitars that seems to hover in the air, while lead vocalist and primary songwriter Maddy Herbert’s vocals are cotton wool soft and expressive. There is a jazzy soul inflection to her voice – exhibiting an astonishing range that appears to have no limitations. Emotions bleed through every note as a synth bed slowly rises beneath the surface, buoyant and dappling.

Herbert says of the song:

I wrote ‘Miles Away’ in 2022 when I was in the midst of a very busy tour schedule. It is about navigating a relationship from a distance and being somewhat unable to express feelings in the way that you would like because of that proximity. ‘Miles Away’ is about being present in that separation and loving the other person from afar.

It’s song that seems to embody lazy Sunday afternoons in the sun, carefree and bucolic with a sepia-tinged nostalgia and a melancholic thread running throughout:

‘Miles Away’ is out on Wednesday 31 May 2023 and you can pre-save here. It comes off Velvet Bloom’s new album ‘Where You Are’ out Friday 30 June via C.W. Records.
