London trio Girl Ray have released a new track and video for the track ‘The Way We Came Back’ ahead of their headline UK tour. The song was written by Poppy Hankin when she was just 16 years old, but had never been recorded until after the release of the bands debut album Earl Grey.

Of the track, the bands Sophie Moss says “It’s cute, I guess. You kinda wanna skip to it, you know? Makes you think about arguments but it doesn’t make you hate them that much. It’s an early, early – we’re talking pre-Earl Grey here – banger that we wanted to oil up. A plump cow that needed to be milked. It was one of the first songs Poppy wrote when she was 16 which we all found pretty impressive. Sly arrangement, good vibes here.”

It’s got this instantly lovable quality about it, which the band seem to trad in, as guitars and harmonies whistfully strum and sing along with melodies that lay long in your memory. ON a cold day like today (here, anyway) its the perfect comfort blanjet. “The Way We Came Back” comes with an accompanying music video, shot on the Isle of Sheppey during a blizzard. “We wanted to go for a 60s, beachy Californian pop video,” says director Rita Conry. “The weather was below freezing, so it was ideal conditions to be roaming the beaches of Kent. It was actually quite beautiful though, and the song is about a journey, so our adventure fit quite nicely with that.”

Check the band out on their forthcoming tour, and Summer festivals. Full details here
