Marilyn Maria supported one of Backseat Mafia’s beloved antipodean bands, the magnificent Infinity Broke, over the weekend and our spy in the crowd was highly impressed by them. It so happens that the band has just released a very explosive and cathartic single, ‘Watching America’, which we are happy to shine a light on.

‘Watching America’, written in the middle of the COVID horror show, teeters on the brink of chaos: a thrashing melange of raw guitars and jungle rhythms thunder and plough as singer Angus Hardy spits and rages at the state of the world with an angry eloquence. It really is the most cathartic stuff you could hear. Hardy’s spoken word interlude makes no bones about his cynical views of the then so-called leader of the free world (in 2020), all poured into a seething cauldron of punky, spiky instrumentation. The band says of the track:

It’s about cognitive distance, social media, algorithms, helplessness, complicity and watching the unchecked neo- liberal nightmare manifest on your feed.

The video shows clips of some scenes of a weird and golden-aged America interspersed with the band in action – wild, unrestrained and glorious:

‘Watching America’ is available to download and stream through all the usual outlets here and through the link below:

Marilyn Maria will be releasing an EP entitled ‘2020 Baby, Part 2’ on 18 August 2022 (you can pre-save it here) and will be launching it on 26 August 2022 – details below.
