Remy Boccalatte must be one of the busiest creatives and entrepreneurs around. Not only does he run the tasteful boutique False Peak Records in Brisbane (with a stunning roster of bands both local and international including The Apparitions, Graywave, The Yugoslav Attack, David Rylands, We Set Sail, Spring Skier and Overland Inn) but he also plays in a number of very impressive local bands that have featured on the pages of Backseat Mafia, including solo work under his own name and Spring Skier and Dänmark. And he makes honey.

An Heirloom is another project in which Boccalatte joined forces with fellow local musician and producer Andrew Foley, whose music in Grids/Units/Planes (the EP ‘Diverge and Coalesce’) has been lauded by Backseat Mafia in the past. The duo make a triumphant return with the release of the new single ‘Return Flight’. At the risk of testing the limits of creative journalism, it is one flight you want to catch.

An ambient and liquid flow of gentle pianos and synths warmly envelop you before the distant dreamy vocals float across the surface. The whole effect is like some post-operation cotton wool blanket wrapping you up tight in a gentle warmth as you awake from sedation. Layered vocals are ethereal and melancholic, heartachingly beautiful. The lyrics evoke a feeling of drifting across the sky in a reverie:

Walls down, relent it
Feel the sunlight, bask in it
Let go the penance of your own plight
Just press unpause

Open up, get it, it’s your own life, don’t settle.

This has deep in its genes the electronic pop warmth of bands like M83 and the dramatic, expansive and emotional sounds of Sigur Rós.

The accompanying video is a breathtaking night time drone flight across Brisbane by Troy Nickel that evokes a Nicolas Winding Refn or Michael Mann film, a suitably enigmatic and dramatic augmentation of the music:

‘Return Flight’ is out today and available through all the usual streaming and download sites and through the link below:

An Heirloom will be putting their valuable wares on display tonight at the legendary The Bearded Lady in Brisbane to launch the single, along with glows – see details below and further details and tickets available here:
