Alfie Templeman has today released his much-anticipated debut album ‘Mellow Moon’ via Chess Club Records/AWAL. In more good news for fans, the 19-year-old British breakout star will be performing two exclusive headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne this June as well as supporting The Wombats in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane on their arena tour. This will be Templeman’s first visit to Australia.

Templeman has partnered with Amazon Music and Twitch on ‘Welcome to the Mellow Moon’ – a large-scale virtual world purpose built in the #1 best-selling video game of all time, Minecraft. In the game, Templeman and his band perform songs from the new album live via their bespoke custom Minecraft avatars in true festival style, alongside performances from an exclusive selection of exciting artists who were handpicked by Templeman, including The Vaccines, Thomas Headon, Everything Everything, Coach Party, Phoebe Green, Matilda Mann, L’objectif, Todd Rundgren, and more.

‘Mellow Moon’ kicks off with the track ‘A Western’ and immediately you know that this album is going to be a treat. The song has a compelling beat with Templeman’s soaring vocals delivering a 1970s style disco banger that is simply irresistible. ‘You’re A Liar’ is musically dense and sexy with some great bass guitar a lá Hot Chocolate it is retro-gorgeous. ‘Broken’ has a riff that is reminiscent of Coldplay’s ‘Adventure of a Lifetime‘ and is all glorious funky pop. ‘Folding Mountains’ is a mid-tempo song with swooning vocals and a hooky chorus that is tantalising – there’s no escape and you’re left floundering helplessly like a fish on a line as Templeman reels you in. On ‘3D Feelings’ Templeman’s vocals are more assertive as he takes complete control of your emotions. ‘Candyfloss’ harks back to the heyday of Wham! it’s an onslaught of jangling guitars and shimmering vocals, you can almost picture Templeman dancing around in a ‘Choose Life’ shirt. The divine, previously released ‘Colour Me Blue‘ is like a spoonful of sugar designed to satiate a hypoglycaemic soul.

‘Galaxy’ has a lilting, hypnotic beat and scrumptious chorus. ‘Leaving Today’ is anthemic and features soaring harmonies, certainly destined to be the lighters-raised rousing sing-along at live shows. ‘Take Some Time’ has a menacing beat with a great guitar solo and Templeman delivering his vocals in a conspiratorial tone. Title track ‘Mellow Moon’ is summery pop, with promises of a great time to be had by all. The last song, ‘Just Below The Above’ is a gentle ballad that starts with just Templeman’s voice and an acoustic guitar, it builds slowly to a crescendo with some Queen-like harmonising before fading out and abruptly ending, leaving you wanting more.

On this album, Templeman sings about galaxies and moons, the planetary theme is very fitting because he is a on the verge of a stellar career. Templeman draws on diverse musical influences, mixes them with a contemporary sound, sprinkles on some magic stardust and delivers an album packed with shimmering pop hits. Destined to be the hit of the northern hemisphere summer of 2022.
