Gold Coast-based duo Hollow Coves has recently gifted us all with their latest single, ‘Photographs‘. The track, steeped in nostalgia and warmth, serves as a tribute to the traditional charm of tangible photographs, inspired by the heartwarming tradition of Matt Carins’ mother who compiled a photo album for him from the day he entered the world. It effortlessly immerses you in the experience of playing an old Coastal Chill album while cruising along the coastline, the music harmonising seamlessly with the rhythm of the waves.

The music video for ‘Photographs’ is truly enchanting, a delightful montage featuring early 2000s family footage of the duo’s childhoods. This nostalgic reel is interwoven with scenes of them playing the song in a homely living room, creating a perfect complement to the emotional depth and nostalgia evoked by the single. It’s akin to the cherished moments at a family reunion, where everyone gathers on the floor to watch old family movies, creating an atmosphere rich with sentiment and connection.

The storyline of ‘Photographs’ is woven into the upcoming release of the duo’s sophomore album, ‘Nothing To Lose’, which is scheduled to grace the airwaves in early March. As they embarked on the initial phases of crafting this much-anticipated album, Hollow Coves collaborated with the masterful Matt Corby and Alex Henrikkson.

Reflecting on the genesis of ‘Photographs’, Hollow Coves shared: “This was the first song we wrote during our sessions with Matt Corby and Alex Henrikkson. We found ourselves immersed in a studio conversation about the evolving nature of photographs—once treasured in photo albums, now often lost in the sea of digital images captured on our phones. Matt (Carins) shared that his mum has diligently maintained a photo album for him and his siblings since their births. We all found this practice to be quite special, recognising it as a somewhat lost art in our modern era. Inspired by his mother and the fading allure of the photograph, we decided to craft a song paying homage to her and this vanishing tradition.“

If you haven’t delved into the duo’s discography before, you might recognise their 2021 hit single ‘Coastline‘, a track that resonated widely on Instagram Reels, securing a spot among the Top 20 most used songs on U.S. Instagram Reels that year. The single also earned Gold certification in both Australia and Canada. Their achievements extend to over 1 billion global streams, boasting 200 million YouTube views and 2.4 million Shazams. As live performers, Hollow Coves has showcased their talent worldwide, gracing festivals like Osheaga, Pukkelpop, Reeperbahn, Live At Leeds, Woodford Folk Festival, among others. The duo has also shared stages with acclaimed artists like The Lumineers, The Paper Kites, and Passenger, earning praise for their captivating performances.

In exciting news, Hollow Coves is also set to embark on a tour in support of their upcoming album ‘Nothing To Lose’. The European and North American tour is scheduled to kick off in March, promising fans an opportunity to experience the magic of ‘Photographs’ and other tracks from the highly anticipated album live.
