Following up from her EP ‘Cortisol and Blue Light’ earlier this year (read my review here), long time favourite here at Backseat Mafia, Melbourne artist Anna Smyrk, has unveiled her new single ‘January Makes Me Sad’ ahead of news of an extensive 13 date US tour.

‘January Makes Me Sad’ has that signature Smyrk tone: a self deprecatory sense of humour delivering erudite lyrics on velvet yearning vocals and dappled instrumentation:

The street are lined
With dead Christmas trees
Already tired
Of what is good for me

Cos January makes me sad
Everybody’s feeling bad
About how much they’re still the same

The track drips with an aching melancholy that positively shimmers, capturing a certain sense of ennui that comes at this time of year:

‘January Makes Me Sad’ is out today and available to download and stream here.
