NEWCASTLE’S soaring ‘gazers Lanterns on the Lake have announced news of a new five-track EP, The Realist, which Bella Union will release on December 11th.

The EP will include four new tracks as well as a reworked, stripped-down arrangement of the single, “Baddies”.

And the quintet have shared that title track today; we’ve embedded it for you, below. It’s got all that finely wrought beauty you’ve come to expect from a brilliant band; Hazel’s voice getting you right there over an emotive simmer of piano and gentle percussion.

Singer Hazel Wilde says: “’The Realist’ is a song about being a dreamer, clinging to a vision and following your heart – even when that path can seem deluded to others.

“It was one of the songs that didn’t make it onto the album, Spook The Herd, as it didn’t fit sonically or narratively. It felt like it came from another place; so we began putting together this EP.

“We wanted to sculpt an intimate, ‘headphones’ record. One for the introverts and dreamers, the ones that still find beauty and magic in things. Recording some of the songs over lockdown in our homes helped in creating that world.”

As with all our favourite artists, Lanterns On The Lake have been chomping at the bit for a return to the live arena, and recently announced a special reduced-capacity show at Sage Gateshead on Saturday, November 7th, at which they’ll be performing Spook The Herd in full. Tickets sold out on the first day, but passes are available to watch the concert via live stream.

And that will hopefully – and let’s keep absolutely everything crossed here, they are cracking live – prelude a UK tour for early next year, the dates for which are as follows:

February 1st, Glasgow, King Tuts;

February 2nd, Leeds, Brudenell Social Club;

February 3rd, Manchester, Gorilla;

February 6th, Birmingham, The Actress & Bishop;

February 7th, Brighton, Patterns;

February 8th, Guildford, Boilerroom;

February 9th; Norwich, Waterfront Studio;

February 10th, London, EartH, Hackney;

February 18th, Southampton, The Brook;
