It’s playtime again for the magnificent Caligula they follow up last year’s live gigs celebrating thirty years of sonic success and their comeback single last year (see my review here), with their powerful new single ‘Mother Please forgive Me’.
‘Mother Please Forgive Me’ is a thrilling magnum opus beginning with a dreamy electronic thrum before the pulse enters – a throbbing undercurrent carrying singer Ash Rothschild’s yearning expressive vocals and an inherent pop sensibility. A DNA test would see trace elements of Depeche Mode and Linkin Park along with an electric thrum that would make Cabaret Voltaire proud.
The powerful heartfelt delivery reflects the touching subject matter relating to heart-rending loss. Rothschild says:
This song came from the realisation that when someone you love is gone, there’s always more you wish you’d said. For me, my mum always told me to be myself. That’s the message I carry now and this song is my way of saying some of the things I didn’t get the chance to say when she was still here.
The lyrics express beautifully this rawness of loss:
I speak of you with songs that paint a picture of the truth
It helped me free the hurt I held so tight inside my youth
It’s the last chance to say I love you, say I can’t let go
It’s the last chance to see you smile, see my eyes in yours
Mother please forgive me for all the things I never ever said
I think I’ve got something in my eye.
The track is accompanied by a dreamy hazy video, enigmatic and immersive:
