Opening with gentle piano surrounded by subtle dappled crackling ambience, ‘Carry On’ quickly sets a warming, emotive tone before Wells’ breathy, melancholic and beautifully controlled lead vocal enters. As the track builds subtle strings bubble under the lead lines as muted drums give the track a pulse and the hypnotic chorus enters.
Expanding into a spine-tingle inducing middle eight at the 2 minute mark, the track hits it’s peak as the vocals soar over a bed of swelling harmonies.
A stunning track comparable to the latter work of Lucy Rose with the beautiful atmospheric feel of John Martyn, Nicki Wells captures something truly beautiful on ‘Carry On’. It’s an emotional and moving yet optimistic piece of work fully deserving of widespread acclaim and success.
