The new single ‘I’m Sorry’ from Naarm/Melbourne duo Wishlist is a delightful, wistful electronic salve. It coasts along on a liquid, bubbling instrumentation infused with an air of yearning and melancholia – essential ingredients for any pop song.
Consisting of Stella Farnan and Soren Maryasin, Wishlist have crafted an evocative song, of which they say:
At a point we managed to make it all come alive just playing acoustic guitars. But we weren’t sure if we’d manage to get it back in the computer again. We kind of ended up collecting all of these samples that became little arrangement building blocks that we fell in love with. From there we rebuilt it over again until it felt right. That’s how we ended up with kind of eclectic sounds across the track.
The lyrics are personal and romantic, expressing the melancholy atmosphere in the delivery:
And I hate how I can get like this
And I hold on to the words we missed
But with each turn there’s a longer list
It’s a fine line and I can’t resist
I’m sorry, I’m sorry
(I’m sorry)
I’m sorry, I’m sorry
The accompanying video, done by the duo with assistance from Evie Vlah and Lauren Kimber, is a kaleidoscope of neon lit colours following the duo, performing as if in some Nicolas Winding Refn movie:
‘I’m Sorry’ is out today and available to download and stream here.
As individual artists, Farnan and Maryasin have performed on stages from the Sydney Opera House to the Forum, toured with the likes of Angie McMahon, Mallrat, and Gretta Ray, and contributed to Grammy-nominated and ARIA-winning projects. These years spent touring and recording as session musicians and producers have shaped this new phase of their creative endeavours, through the vessel of Wishlist.
