It’s often the spaces in between the instruments in a song that create an inedible atmosphere, and the new single by Melbournian duo Tobi Tobi proves this fact. Simple instrumentation (double bass, piano, guitar), so sparse as to be almost undetectable, ripple beneath singer Renee Anderson’s extraordinary vocals and a haunting, heartbreakingly melancholic melody.
There is a deeply reflective and sombre tone to the song, and its ethereal beauty is brought to life by a wonderful video directed by Rozanna Chrapot with dancer Ténéré De Zylva:
Tobi Tobi are Renee Anderson and Jamie Barlow, both of whom were in a band called Private Life which supported big names like Garbage and Owl Eyes and had numerous plays on the Australian national broadcaster Triple J.
