Track/Video: Montreal minstrel poet Whitney K previews anticipated new album ‘Bubble’ with the warm, waltzing ‘Jolene’.

Modern day troubadour, Canadian singer-songwriter Konner Whitney aka Whitney K is on the move. After releasing three mighty slices of his raw, country rock poeticism for Bologna’s Maple Death Records, the indispensable ‘Two Years’, the hypnotic ‘Hard To Be A God’ and the raucous ‘Viva!’, he’s now hopped on board the mighty Fire label’s roster.

That doesn’t signal an easing off or smoothing down though. For ‘Bubble’, his first album at this new home (out 12th September) some band mates Josh Boguski and Michael Halls remain close, ensuring the rugged Whitney K realism continues to electrify. You might have already heard the crisp confessional garage pop of Heaven or the jangling sad beauty of Rosy, well now comes the sparkling Jolene to complete the album trailer hat trick.

A waltzing country blues number where whispers of Bill Callaghan and Justin Townes Earle meet Mark Everett (aka E) in the hook, Konner has teased that the song charts the “experience going back out into the dating world post covid” or perhaps imagines a “sequel or maybe an epilogue to Dolly Parton’s Jolene”. Whatever, the tune warmly rolls through the twangs with his fine-tuned turns of phrase as always demanding attention.

September’s looking fine with Whitney K around.
