Warpaint the quartet made up of Emily Kokal (guitar, vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, vocals), Stella Mozgawa (drums, vocals) and Theresa Wayman (guitar, vocals) have released two new tracks ‘Champion’ and ‘Stevie’ from their upcoming album ‘Radiate Like This’ which will be released on 6 May 2022.

The band has been on hiatus since 2016 when they released the critically-acclaimed album ‘Heads Up’. After the release of that album there followed a hectic period where the four women got caught up with solo album projects, having babies and touring. When the band reconvened for some foundational tracking sessions with co-producer Sam Petts-Davies (Thom Yorke, Frank Ocean, Skullcrusher,) the pandemic hit and the project was put on hold for a while. Eventually recording resumed with the band members all physically apart, which was a very strange experience for the close-knit quartet. Each musician had to record her part separately and sometimes this occurred in makeshift home studios.

“Being apart it was a little tricky to make a video,” Jenny Lee Lindberg says. “Tt (Theresa Wayman) came up with some key points with camera and angles, so we had some cohesion. The motivation was to feel like a champ and deliver the goods and let your honey flag shine.”

‘Champion’ is a gorgeous song, it features the laid-back harmonies that epitomise Warpaint’s music. The track starts off with just the naked vocals and a backbeat but soon the rest of the band kicks in and the song finds a delectable groove. Stella Mozgawa’s drumming is superb, so subtle yet so commanding, it’s the force that drives the song from sublime beginnings to a giddying summit. This is a magnificent return to form.

The second single off ‘Radiate Like This’ is ‘Stevie’ which the band has described as “a love song, pure and true”. The video for ‘Stevie’ was developed in collaboration with Fascinated by Everything. The visuals are mesmerisingly beautiful and perfectly complement the song which is a celebration of love. ‘Stevie’ sees Warpaint bringing out a jazzy groove as they celebrate the joy of love. A feature of this song is the bass line that serves as a backdrop to the soaring vocals. Another sublime track that is like a sugar hit and leaves you craving more, more, more.

Warpaint have announced a tour to support the new album with U.K. and Europe dates announced and more to follow.
