Montreal’s Rosier continue their quietly spellbinding evolution with ‘Plus d’amis’, a dusky-edged lament that finds the quintet leaning further into the grain of distortion and dream. Featuring the unmistakable Safia Nolin, the single arrives February 13th ahead of a deluxe edition of Elle veille encore later this autumn, and signals a darker, more alternative shade to the band’s already spectral folk palette.
Sung entirely in French, Plus d’amis drifts in like a slow exhale, hushed, hazy and heavy with atmosphere. There are shades of Slowdive’s blurriness, Mazzy Star’s twilight ache and PJ Harvey’s raw intimacy, yet Rosier remain rooted in their own Franco-Canadian lineage. Drawn from archival folk material uncovered during research for Elle veille encore, the song circles the ancient, elemental fear of losing your mother. It’s a theme that hangs in the air like mist, unresolved and quietly devastating.
Nolin’s voice folds seamlessly into Rosier’s texture, the intertwined vocals hovering over minimalist instrumentation and softly distorted guitars. The effect is both intimate and cavernous, a 90s-inflected shoegaze shimmer refracted through traditional song. Time seems to stand still.
Long celebrated for modernising folk traditions while centring women’s voices, Rosier once again balance heritage and reinvention with poise. A UK and European tour follows in March, bringing this beautiful new chapter to dimly lit rooms across the continent.
