Track: Metric surge back with defiant new single ‘Crush Forever’

There’s no soft landing here. ‘Crush Forever’ arrives like a surge of intent, a track that doesn’t ask permission so much as kick the door open and dare you to keep up. With their tenth album Romanticize The Dive on the horizon, Metric sound locked back into the voltage that made them essential in the first place, only now it’s sharpened by two decades of survival.

Frontwoman Emily Haines frames the track as a “love letter to strong girls,” but there’s nothing delicate about it. Written in a stream-of-consciousness rush, the lyrics read like a transmission mid-flight, part manifesto, part pep talk, part survival guide.

It follows the kinetic punch of ‘Time Is A Bomb’ and the reflective pulse of ‘Victim of Luck’, each track sketching a different edge of the same idea: urgency, identity, and the strange elasticity of time. If those songs mapped the terrain, ‘Crush Forever’ plants a flag in it.

For Romanticize The Dive, Metric return to Electric Lady Studios, the same creative ground zero that shaped their early years. Reuniting with longtime collaborator Gavin Brown alongside Jimmy Shaw, Liam O’Neil and mix engineer John O’Mahoney, the band tap back into the friction and freedom of early-2000s New York, then drag it headfirst into 2026. The result feels less like nostalgia and more like reclamation.

That sense of control has always defined Metric’s trajectory. Over two decades, the band have sidestepped major label expectations, built their own infrastructure, and carved out a space where commercial success and creative autonomy coexist without compromise. It’s a rare balance, and one that continues to inform everything they release.

Outside the band, Haines and Shaw’s fingerprints stretch wide. From their foundational roles in Broken Social Scene to collaborations with Lou Reed, their careers have moved through scenes, cities and eras without ever losing a sense of identity. But Metric remains the core, the place where all those threads converge.

‘Crush Forever’ captures that convergence in real time. It’s urgent, direct, and unafraid to take up space, a reminder that resilience doesn’t have to be quiet, and that sometimes the most powerful thing a song can do is push forward without hesitation.
