Live review: Girl In Red w/ Betty Taylor, The Metro Sydney 060223

Finally back in Australia for the first time since 2019, Girl In Red (Norway) headlined shows in Melbourne and Sydney as well as an appearance at Laneway Festival. Fresh releases ‘We Fell In Love In October’ and ‘I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend’ and ‘October Passed Me By’ were clearly appreciated by the young crowd, who were screaming The Metro Theatre down from the second GIR appeared.

Girl In Red were supported by duo Betty Taylor who greeted by squeals of delight from the audience who were clearly enthralled by the beautifully crafted songs of love and loss. Hailing from the Sunshine Coast, the girls were a fitting opener for the night. Plenty of energy, wonderful musicianship and banter back and forth with fans provided for a fabulous introduction to a night that began with queues of enthusiastic fans around the corner since the morning.

Girl In Red followed and opened the set with hit song ‘You Stupid Bitch’. The incredible amount of energy throughout the night with plenty of leaps, jumps and hair flicking matched the enthusiasm of the packed crowd who came bearing gifts, waving signs (including one asking for singer Marie Ulven to draw a tattoo for one lucky girl) and pride flags draped along the barrier. One brave fan, Mary, even volunteered to demonstrate a ‘shoey’ later in the evening after the crowd suggested Marie should do one.

When I was invited to go along to capture the night, I was told by our team that I would be in for a brilliant gig. Suffice to say, I wasn’t prepared for just how much I would enjoy the evening. Both acts were superb – from the minute each took to the stage, the energy levels were through the roof, each song a banger and the feedback from the crowd palpable; this reviewer was won over within minutes!
