DEADLETTER are currently supporting Placebo on their European Arena Tour which will include a date at London’s Brixton Academy. The bigger stages appear to be suiting them just fine and they have now released new single ‘Madge’s Declaration’ on SO Recordings. This is the last track to be taken from their forthcoming debut EP Heat! which is set for release on 18 November.

The Madge in question here is Madonna and the song’s name and idea is drawn from her lyrics back in 1984: “We are living in a material world.” The pursuit of material articles seems to have only strengthened over time. Values and humility are disregarded in this pursuit. Everything today is disposable; if something is not instantly pleasing it is cast away. ‘Madges Declaration‘ is lyric driven for the first two thirds of the track. We cannot ignore the statement of: “I’ve got shoes, but no soul”. What a clever play on words, and those six words convey so much about materialism. The accompanying screechy guitar and percussion add to the slight foreboding atmosphere within the song. However the last third shifts gear and heads into funkier territory, but still the theme is forefront: “I’ve got shoes, but no soul”.

Frontman Zac Lawrence expands on the track:
“We wanted to make something that had elements of humour and danceability, trying to explore a genuinely terrifying idea in a manner which mirrors our cultural fascination with it. Our tendency to work around the drumbeat and bassline is highly evident here, with the song climaxing in a cacophony of primal ecstasy.”
