News: Dolce Blue Teases Upcoming Album with Dreamy New Track ‘Typical Kind of Fun’

Fresh from garnering praise from Triple J, Apple Music, and RTRFM for their March release ‘Sugar Free,’ and being named a finalist in Happy Mag’s ‘Needle in the Hay’ song competition, Dolce Blue continues to build anticipation for their upcoming album Sweet Melancholy (Deluxe). Their latest single, ‘Typical Kind of Fun,’ is a dreamy indie rock track that contrasts with the snappiness of ‘Sugar Free,’ harking back to previous releases like ‘Nothing Bad’ and ‘Dream Catcher.’

‘Typical Kind of Fun’ changes the pace with a laid-back vintage flair, allowing the composition to be led by moody guitar grooves and pensive vocal performances. The track’s best moment is a wistful vocal duet between frontwoman Veronica Zurzolo and drummer Brody Honey, who co-wrote the song. The gentle propulsions of the rhythm section complement their emotive voices perfectly.

“Brody came to me with some songs he had started writing, one of them was just a snippet which is the opening few lines of ‘Typical Kind of Fun’ that I felt really drawn to,” Veronica explains. “I could relate to the idea of somebody having a hold on you and the disappointment and betrayal of finding out that that person is not really who you thought they were, so I expanded on it to form the rest of the song.”

Originally conceived during the early days of writing Sweet Melancholy, the track didn’t make the original LP’s track listing. Veronica shares that “it’s always just a song that’s stuck in my head, and I’m glad that we’ve finally recorded it and Brody’s built up the confidence to share his singing voice!”

Dolce Blue, hailing from the Western Australian town of Kalamunda, first emerged in 2018 with their self-made debut single ‘New White Sneakers’ and subsequent 13-track Forever Is Too Long. The band quickly gained local support from institutions like RTRFM 92.1 and garnered national radio coverage, leading to their signing with the multi-time WA Music Label of the Year winner, Blue Grey Pink.

Their rise has seen them support notable acts like Sly Withers, Shag Rock, Noah Dillon, Lucy Peach, Dulcie, Little Quirks, and Ghost Care. Fresh off their first nationwide tour, which wrapped up with an unofficial showcase of their latest LP Sweet Melancholy at BIGSOUND 2023, the band is poised for a breakthrough year.

Looking ahead to 2024, Dolce Blue—comprising songwriter/frontwoman Veronica Zurzolo (she/her), bassist Daniel Taylor (he/him), guitarist Lachlan Casey (he/him), and drummer Brody Honey (he/him)—is set to cement their status as a band to watch with the deluxe edition of Sweet Melancholy looming on the horizon.
