City Recital Hall has announced Michael Rother and Friends will be performing their 50+ Years of NEU! on Thursday 22 February 2024 in Eora/Sydney.

During this performance Rother will be paying tribute to the legendary sounds that have shaped the world of electronic and experimental music.

For many fans, musicians and critics alike the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Rother is a key figure of the innovative music scene originating from Germany in the early 1970s. His music has been inspirational for generations of musicians – from David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, DEVO, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, U2, Radiohead, Primal Scream, and beyond. Michael Rother was a member of Kraftwerk in 1971 and formed the legendary bands NEU! (with Klaus Dinger) and Harmonia (with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster).

Neu! 50+ is a recognition and a celebration of the legacy of these pioneering musicians. It collects together the now legendary NEU! canon and recasts it. It is a tribute to Dinger and a recognition of Rother’s continued exploration of his utterly unique and profound way of music making. For these concerts Michael Rother is joined by long time collaborators Hans Lampe on drums (La Düsseldorf), Franz Bargmann on guitar (ex Camera) and Vittoria Maccabruni (electronics & vocals).

NEU! was founded in 1971 by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, and stands as a seminal influence in the development of modern music, particularly in the genres of Krautrock and experimental rock. The duo’s innovative approach, characterized by minimalist arrangements, repetitive drum beats, and ambient noise, laid the groundwork for various music styles that emerged later. Their distinct sound, often referred to as the “Motorik” beat, became a blueprint for the development of electronic music, punk rock, and post-punk.
