Adelaide-based artist My Chérie returns today with Life is, a new single shaped by the contours of distance, transience, and observation. Premiering on Backseat Mafia, the track is rooted in a formative three-month solo journey across Europe—written during a 30-hour flight home, as the experience was still settling into memory.
Far from a typical travelogue, Life is draws from the quiet moments that accompanied life in hostels, shared dinners with strangers, and the invisible threads between lives encountered on the road. The song signals a subtle shift in My Chérie’s approach, moving toward a more textured, atmospheric production style and introspective lyrical palette. The new track has been released with an accompanying video.
This was the easiest and most fun music video I’ve ever been a part of and I’m so happy with how beautifully it turned out! It was the first time I’ve had my band members with me in a music video, and their energy made it feel like we were performing live….which, in a way, we were. A few people even stopped to watch us as they strolled by. I remember thinking, they should really hear us when we’re plugged in! The wind added its own magic like my hair was swaying in the air setting a vibe, the ocean was crashing below, and we were chasing the sunset. Bryce gets all the credit. He directed everything so clearly and kindly, knowing exactly when to shift cameras etc to capture the fast-moving light. I’m such an ocean person, so filming on a cliff with my giggling bandmates, making art together with that view… it was just a really beautiful experience.
What emerges is a song that sits between stillness and motion—anchored by minimalist arrangements and a melodic sensibility informed by the playlists that accompanied her travels. Lyrically, it leans into life’s transient and sometimes contradictory feelings: isolation and belonging, restlessness and peace.
Already known for weaving immersive soundscapes through her songwriting, My Chérie continues to chart her own course through the Australian indie landscape. With Life is, she offers a thoughtful meditation on the nature of movement—not just geographically, but emotionally.
