Melbourne’s Northcote Theatre pulsed with energy on Friday night as Obongjayar delivered a performance that fused soul, pop and high-octane rhythm. Born in Lagos and raised in Calabar before relocating to the UK at 18, the singer has built a reputation for defying neat genre labels, and his Melbourne appearance leaned fully into that restless musical identity.

From the moment he took the stage, Obongjayar brought a rush of sound that kept the room in constant motion. Roaring dance instrumentals collided with soulful melodies, creating a set that moved fluidly between reflective moments and full-bodied grooves. The result was a show that felt both emotionally grounded and built for the dancefloor, the crowd moving as one through the night.

Obongjayar’s music has always blurred the boundaries between continents and genres; at Northcote Theatre, it translated into a show that kept Melbourne moving long after the lights came up.
