Dea Matrona are a band that keep themselves on the move. From busking in the streets of Belfast to hitting some of Europe’s biggest festival stages, Mollie McGinn and Orláith Forsythe have built their reputation through relentless touring and songs that have something to say.

At the end of this month, they hit the road again on a six-date UK and Ireland tour with their sound developing into something altogether more confident and assured. This tour is supporting their second album – Hate That I Care – a record that represents a step forward for the duo. Written, recorded and produced by the group, Dea Matrona are pushing further into alt-rock territory, sharpening the sound without losing the infectious energy that first caught our attention.

There’s purpose in the new music. The songs explore identity, expectation and the sometimes uncomfortable business of working out who you are. There’s vulnerability but with defiance that gives the record its backbone. The band explain that this record became a way of challenging assumptions that others make about them and finding strength in their own values.

The honesty has always been key to Dea Matrona’s appeal. Having already hit the Indie Top 10 with their debut single, sharing stages with The Beaches and supporting Sting, they’ve earned their audience through their conviction.

Hate That I Care gives them fresh ammunition and the November dates offer a chance to see the band going through the gears. We saw them back in 2024, and they were a great proposition then. The new album gives them a great platform to kick on to the next level.
