We are inordinately honoured to bring you the new video for Melbourne’s fabulous Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird‘s (CTBNF) track ‘Gabriel’s Horn’, off last year’s magnum opus ‘Smiles of Earth’, released through the legendary Double Drummer. To add icing to the cake, CTBNF is also announcing a massive UK/European tour later this year.

‘Smiles of Earth’ was for me one of the albums of the year last year – if not THE album of the year (see my review here), and this band has a garnered a reputation for magnificent live shows. Opening the album, ‘Gabriel’s Horn’ has a brilliant gospel/soul tinge and a saxophone edging that adds a filament of pure gold. There is an inherent sensuousness to the melody and to the cloak and sandals lyrics:

The sword fights, the dagger kills,
I see a fire upon the hill,
Gabriel, maybe you’ll,
Come and blow us away,

You’ll blow us and then,
You’ll blow us again,
Blow us away, Gabriel!

It is magnificent and zesty opening to the album, a thrilling introduction to the sumptuous feast that follows.

The video we are premiering today was created by Matthew Shaw and Sam Soh for the Fantastic Film Festival Australia, where it received the People’s Choice award. It is an enthralling series of dance routines in a raw urban environment that capture the exuberant nature of the track and the searing euphoria the sounds create.

Shaw and Soh said:

This video emerged out of a search for dance in everyday settings. The result is a street cast compilation of impromptu performances that celebrate the joy of movement and music.

The movements and expression by the dancers are eye wateringly magnificent – providing an immersive display of liquid agility and passion that perfectly matches the almost bacchanalian and sensuous excesses of the song itself:

CTBNF are embarking on an ambitious tour in October which will see them traverse the length and breadth of the UK and Europe. You would be remiss if you were to miss this opportunity to see one of the most exciting antipodean bands around. Details are as follows, with ticket links:
