Brighton may be best known musically as an indie outpost but fizzing around the fringes there’s some potent R ‘n B meets garage meets hip-hop alchemy going on. Step up long-time pivots in the scene, Bristol raised, Iranian rapper/songwriter kavzad and wordsmith/poet/ grass roots music champion JED with intel about their sharp-edged debut project as a duo, ‘BROKEN GLASS’.

It’s an album imprinted with funk, soul and nu-jazz grooves which power a rich flow of rhymes and add more fusion-focused dynamism to UK hip-hop. You get the sniping, satirical MORE$tYLE, the smooth nu-soul tones of HER and the poetic title track’s cosmic swirl. There’s even space for a woozy slice of schmoozy retro-swing as a closer with the laid back ‘whatever’ messaging of ALRIGHT.

‘BROKEN GLASS’ is streaming now in all the usual places, plus the irrepressible partnership have added a visual dimension to the project with a spoofing mockumentary ‘THREE WEMBLEYS’ (Watch Here ) and a just-released video for the album’s lead single ‘COME&GO‘ (Watch Here ). A funk-fuelled cinematic cut, the song highlights their punchy vocal connection and natural inclination for shaping that lush lo-fi hook. Doing exactly all it sets out to do ‘COME&GO’ should lead you deeper into the quirky, singular sound-world of JED & kavzad’s ‘BROKEN GLASS’.
