While the first and third movements, “Requiem Aeternum” and “Dies Irae,” pay homage to Mozart’s Requiem, they infuse it with the essence of Tango Nuevo and the soul-stirring sounds of Maksin’s solo cello.
The second movement, “Tuba Mirum,” transports listeners with a Middle Eastern drum groove and cello solos that evoke the spirit of a Balkan trumpet solo, leading to an apocalyptic climax. The closing movement, “Lux Aeterna,” is a serene and solemn milonga, reminiscent of Astor Piazzolla.
