News: j dylan paul Releases ‘i didn’t ask to be a bird’

The new album from j dylan paul ‘i didn’t ask to be a bird’ is a study in contrasts, balancing explosive rock energy with intimate, tender moments. The first half features driving rock tracks that surge into glorious synth and electric guitar climaxes. The second half is more delicate, opening with the a cappella track ‘take me’, followed by soft pop ballads built around piano and voice. By the album’s end, listeners are brought full circle, completing a cathartic return to the intensity introduced at the start.

Community lies at the heart of i didn’t ask to be a bird. Paul is an active member of Rotary, a queer collaborative art group, and participates in the Discord server for the band Pacing. Members of these communities contributed artwork, writing, production, and performances, shaping the record at every stage. Many contributors belong to demographics that the current U.S. administration seeks to marginalize or erase, making the album a bold statement about the enduring power of art in the face of oppression.

For Paul, music is about honesty and raw emotion. Their work aims to evoke a visceral response: “At its core is an honesty that asks for vulnerability in return. Sometimes the feeling is cathartic — like ice‑cold water after crying, or the shock of a deep breath of winter air. Other times it lingers, haunting and hard to name. It can be poignant, melancholy, or nostalgic without a clear origin. The goal is simple: that it aches, and that you feel seen.”

While some demos for the project date back to 2017, the album in its current form took shape in 2022. Paul was working as a mixing engineer on Pacing’s record Real Poetry when a long writer’s block led them to send demos to Pacing’s lead singer, Katie McTigue. Through her input and their collaboration on several songs, Paul finally saw the possibility of completing a full-length LP.

Paul’s musical history includes the synth-heavy, mathy rock of the two-piece band Premises, active from 2019–2024 with drummer Tim Stefaniak, who also contributes to this album. Beyond performing, Paul continues to work as a mixing engineer in EDM, collaborating with artists such as SLANDER, Dylan Matthew, and ARMNHMR.

Unapologetically leftist, Paul proudly worked with queer collaborators on the album and is a staunch advocate for trans rights, anti-capitalism, and the global fight against imperialism and apartheid. i didn’t ask to be a bird is as much a political statement as it is a personal journey — one where vulnerability, community, and defiance intertwine to create music that doesn’t just sound powerful, but feels it.
