North Carolina indie rock outfit Wednesday have announced their return to Australia this May and June, bringing their restless blend of Southern grit and guitar noise back to local stages. Led by songwriter Karly Hartzman, the band will perform two nights at the RISING Melbourne before heading north for a Sydney headline show at Metro Theatre, presented by Mistletone.
Beloved by critics and fans alike, Wednesday have steadily carved out a distinctive corner of modern guitar music. Their sound blends outlaw country textures, indie-pop melody and walls of distortion into something that feels at once familiar and unruly, with Hartzman’s place-soaked storytelling anchoring the chaos.
The band’s latest album, Bleeds, arrives as the group’s most fully realised statement yet. Where 2023’s Rat Saw Godmarked a breakthrough moment, Bleeds has pushed Wednesday further into the spotlight. The record has dominated year-end lists and drawn praise from outlets including Pitchfork, TIME, GQ, NPR and Rolling Stone, while also earning the band a TV debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
True to its title, Bleeds distils everything that defines Wednesday’s sound. Country-inflected storytelling collides with sludge-heavy guitar and indie-pop hooks, while Hartzman’s voice glides between tenderness and defiance. Tracks like “Elderberry Wine” highlight her knack for finding emotional weight in everyday detail, while the scorned punch of “Townies” reminds listeners just how ferocious the band can be.
Australian audiences already know the impact Wednesday can have in a room. Their debut visit in 2024 saw them win over crowds at festivals including Golden Plains Festival, MONA FOMA and Perth Festival to packed club rooms, the band have steadily built a reputation for performances that feel communal rather than choreographed.
Since then the momentum has only grown. Wednesday have sold out larger rooms across the UK and Europe, including London’s 3,000-capacity Roundhouse, where The Times hailed the band as “a five-star example of the US crank rock invasion.”
Their Australian return will also feature a strong local lineup of supports: Alien Nosejob (May 31), Season 2 (June 1)and Naaki Soul (June 3).
For a band that thrives on the messy magic of guitars, storytelling and shared noise, these May and June shows promise something rare: a rock band catching fire in real time.
