Premiere: ‘Silence is Golden’ but you really have to hear the glorious new single from Sydney supergroup Victoria.

Back in 2023, Sydney supergroup Victoria released their magnificent debut album ‘Treats’ which perfectly captured the vicissitudes of life with warmth and compassion, wrapped up in a series of tracks that positively sparkled (see my 9.5/10 review here). Now, two years later we are exceedingly honoured to give you an exclusive taste of their new single ‘Silence is Golden’, released again through legendary producer Wayne Connolly’s label Scenic Drive Records and Believe.

‘Silence’ proves the old adage that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Filled with their signature adhesive pop melodies and jingle jangle guitars, ‘Silence’ is a delicious mix of shoegaze and indie pop telling a curious and intriguing tale of indulgence:

We were doin’ speed, tons of it
With the skinhead cousins on their big trip

The guitars ripple like waves coming into the shore with a visceral rhythm section, while the vocals are distant and louche, carrying a soaring anthemic chorus with delicate backing vocals, bleeding with a melancholy air.

This is an early amuse bouche for a forthcoming album (tentatively entitled ‘Paris Flowers’) and we here at the antipodean outpost of Backseat Mafia cannot wait.

The accompanying video shows the band in performance – an enigmatic and thrilling vison of the band in action with a great on-stage presence and camaraderie:

‘Silence is Golden’ is out tomorrow (Friday, 21 November) via all the usual sites. You can catch Victoria live for their last 2025 show at The Union with Wifey and Distant Nephew on Sunday, 14 December.

Victoria, named after the Kinks song, consists of members of seminal bands Youth Group, The Vines, Smudge and Songs. Members are Cameron Emerson-Elliott (Youth Group), Alison Galloway (Smudge), Patrick Matthews (The Vines, Youth Group) and Max Doyle (Songs).
