Formed out of the ashes of Pela, and named after the month where the bands main protagonists Billy McCarthy and Eric Sanderson were born, Augustines have returned. Their first, brilliant, album Rise Ye Sunken Ships was coloured with the experience of the tragic death of McCarthy’s brother James. Things were made more difficult by a struggle to get the record finished and released.
Now they’re back with a new, self-titled album, released via the Votiv / Caroline International. Recorded with co-producer Peter Katis (The National, Frightened Rabbit, Interpol, Jonsi) at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut, it has a much more positive outlook, triumphant even. As drummer Rob Allen commented “This was us moving on together. It was wonderful to come through the other end and record a new record. It was a huge accomplishment and it looks towards a brighter future for us all.”
