News: Iron & Wine returns to Australia with a rare run of intimate solo shows

Iron and Wine

Iron & Wine, the long-running moniker of singer-songwriter and film studies lecturer Sam Beam, returns to Australia this February and March for a run of solo headline shows and festival appearances that lean into restraint, warmth, and emotional precision. Performing alone on stage, Beam strips his songs back to their essentials, letting melody, lyric, and voice carry the weight.

Defined by burnished vocals and a lyrical sensibility that drifts freely between the personal and the cinematic, Iron & Wine remains one of the most quietly influential figures to emerge from the first wave of indie folk. Beam’s writing has always favoured nuance over drama, intimacy over spectacle, and these solo performances promise a rare closeness with material that has soundtracked lives for more than two decades.

The tour follows the release of Making Good Time, a covers EP recorded with Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses, as well as 2024’s Light Verse, a record that balances orchestral ambition with reflective calm. Fresh from a major US tour alongside I’m With Her and Band of Horses, Beam arrives in Australia with renewed focus and quiet confidence.

Across a catalogue that spans seven studio albums, Iron & Wine has moved gracefully between hushed minimalism and widescreen arrangements. From the lo-fi intimacy of The Creek Drank the Cradle through the rustic textures of The Shepherd’s Dog, the adventurous turns of Kiss Each Other Clean and Ghost on Ghost, and the measured grace of Beast Epic and Light Verse, Beam has built a body of work defined by emotional clarity and patience.

These shows will see Beam revisit material from across his career, including selections from Light Verse, beloved collaborations with Calexico and I’m With Her, and songs that crossed into popular consciousness via soundtracks like Twilight. Each performance promises a sense of space and stillness, where silence matters as much as sound.

Iron & Wine will be joined by Leah Senior on all shows excluding Tasmania, with Teresa Dixon opening the Hobart date. Expect intimate rooms, attentive audiences, and an evening shaped by folk music at its most considered and human.
