News: Out Run Unveil Debut Album ‘Past Lives’

Florence-based synthwave project Out Run has unveiled their highly anticipated 12-track debut album, Past Lives, led by the release of the energetic and reflective new single and title track. The album marks a defining moment in the band’s evolution, fusing cinematic, 80s-inspired synth textures with contemporary production and emotionally charged songwriting that places Out Run firmly within the modern indie-electronic conversation.

Founded in 2022 by singer-songwriter Ginevra Abbarchini and multi-instrumentalist Lawrence Fancelli, Out Run quickly distinguished themselves through a sound that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Joined by producer Niccolò Messeri on select tracks, the project takes its name from the iconic 1986 arcade game Out Run, a reference that extends beyond aesthetics into the band’s broader creative vision. Retro-futuristic sound design, dreamy melodies, and immersive visual storytelling are central to their identity, creating a universe where memory, emotion, and neon-lit atmospheres collide.

The release of Past Lives follows the breakout success of earlier singles ‘Monster’ and ‘Hideaway’, which surpassed one million streams within a year—an impressive milestone that signalled the arrival of a fresh and authentic voice in the indie-electronic and synthwave scene. With their debut album, Out Run expands that promise into a fully realised body of work.

Cinematic and introspective by design, Past Lives unfolds as a journey through memory, distance, and emotional survival. Across its 12 tracks, the album explores the fragile space between holding on and letting go, where love becomes habit, silence grows loud, and dreams dissolve into fragments of former selves. Alongside previously released singles, the record introduces new material that delves into themes of lost love, emotional abuse, and personal reckoning, drawing directly from Abbarchini’s own lived experiences.

“This album is about the people we were once close to who have now become strangers,” says Abbarchini. “Memories of the past replay in our minds and continue to shape who we are.”

Sonically, Past Lives blends Out Run’s signature synth-heavy approach with expansive, cinematic atmospheres. Influences such as Chromatics, Cocteau Twins, College, and Videoclub can be felt throughout the record, yet the band’s sound resists imitation. Often described as ‘80s 3.0’, Out Run’s music reinvents nostalgia through a modern lens—timeless in mood, emotionally resonant, and immersive in scope.

The album’s title track ‘Past Lives’ encapsulates this balance perfectly. Built around the iconic Roland Juno 60, the song pairs dark, dreamy tones with driving synth lines and pulsating rhythms. Energetic yet introspective, it captures the bittersweet tension of revisiting past relationships and confronting the emotional imprints they leave behind.

“It’s reflective but energising, a song about memory, loss, and how our past selves continue to influence us,” says Fancelli.

With its soaring synths, hypnotic grooves, and cinematic flair, ‘Past Lives’ stands as a statement of intent, showcasing Out Run’s ability to craft electronic-pop music that is simultaneously nostalgic, contemporary, and deeply personal.

Out Run is cultivating a bold international presence in the indie-electronic landscape. Their combination of cinematic music, visual storytelling, and authentic connection with fans positions them as a defining voice in modern synthwave and electropop.
